A leak in the exhaust of my furnace?

Our exhaust from the furnace, the chimney thing goes out the side of our house. I smell what smells like burn off, kind of a sweet smell? Anyways I'm thinking there is a leak and wondered if it can cause carbon monoxide. Sorry, I don't know much about this stuff. I realize I'll have to get it fixed.
