Is it normal for tampons to hurt when you take them out?

I wore a tampon for the first time today. I wore a liner because I didn't know how much the tampon would absorb. When I went to the bathroom there were a few drops of blood so I thought it was time to take it out. It hurt really badly. I relaxed and after about twenty seconds sucked it up and pulled it out. Is it normal to hurt?
